Welcome to my Blog.

JILL ROSELL PHOTOGRAPHY

From the moment I received my first SLR camera some twenty years ago - a 21st birthday present - it was love at first touch. To me it was, and is, an instrument of creation and inspiration, and it transformed the way in which I viewed the world. Born and raised in the midst of the natural beauty of New Zealand, I have since had the good fortune to travel extensively and to experience the wonder and beauty of varied countries and cultures.
Along the way I've discovered that a photograph is much more than a moment, an image, or an emotion. Not only can it serve to capture the true essence of a person or place, it can embody their heart and soul. When this is accomplished the photograph takes on a life of its own and triggers a deep emotional response in the viewer. As a professional photographer and an artist, it is this goal that I seek to accomplish. Each time I raise my lens I strive to capture the heart and soul of my subject.
I'm blessed to call Bend in Central Oregon my home, an area with an abundance of natural beauty and a plethora of wonderful activities. Every day I wake up grateful for where I live, what I have, and who I am. My passion for photography could not have evolved without my husband and two young children. Over the years they have offered me endless enriched moments to capture, moments that perfectly illustrate that a photograph can be so much more than just an image.
My passion in life is to search out these "soul moments" through the lens of my camera. I invite you to join me on this ever evolving and exciting journey, one that will undoubtedly provide intimate and remarkable memories captured forever for your lasting enjoyment.

BRETT DENNEN PLAYING IT UP IN BEND, OREGON... {Bend Oregon Portrait Photographer}.

Last month at the Athletic Club of Bend , Musician Brett Dennen entertained a happy crowd on a gorgeous summers evening.

Thank you c3 events for allowing me to capture Brett and his band in action.

It is always a pleasure to photograph talented people who are doing what they are passionate about. I truly feel a connection through my lens and the hours feel like minutes when I am shooting.

Megan Cecil's Story

Some people think life just "is what it is", but really life is how you deal with it.

As a photographer I have always had a knowing inside of me that when possible I am to give my services to others and my community to help make a difference.
It was no coincidence that Megan Cecil and her family recently came into my life. Six months ago Megan’s life went spinning in circles when she suddenly was given an unpleasant and difficult life changing road to go down.
When I was asked to photograph Megan and her family I knew I could make a difference and give her something that would give her strength, hope and joy. When Megan is healed and can look back one day down that road  she traveled I hope these moments I captured of her and her family will remind her of the strength and support that helped guide her to wellness.
Megan being a similar age and also having two young children was a wake up call for me and a reminder that this could happen to any of us at any moment.

I asked Megan after our photo session if she would be willing to share her story in her own words. I knew how important it would be for others to hear her story in order to realize how precious our lives truly are. We might think we are having a bad day but really it is nothing compared to what some others are having to endure. We all need to appreciate more who we are and what we have around us. I hope Megan’s story will open your eyes to appreciate and love more and also as Megan says below to give and receive.

Megan, you are an inspiration to me and I know you will gain all the strength needed to overcome cancer because I know you are listening to your heart. Keep making those memories everyday with your beautiful family as you heal.
Thanks you for sharing  your story!

Megan's words.....

New year and new owners at work meant new insurance. My pen stopped over the cancer option; I hesitated, and then marked no. “I can’t afford any extras”, I thought and the lump and indentation couldn’t be anything, certainly not cancer.

The truth is I had a sinking feeling, I mean what else could it be? I hoped a cyst and made an appointment with my doctor. I cancelled and rescheduled with some lame excuse. I rescheduled again, I didn’t want to know. I finally sucked it up and went to the appointment in the middle of February. I have a very good OB/Gyn, I genuinely like him and his sense of humor – but this appointment, he wasn’t smiling or joking around - he was concerned. He asked how long the lump had been there, but I really didn’t know. So, off I went for a mammogram.

Having just turned 38, I had not had a mammogram before. They really do squish your breast as flat as pancake and what’s more amazing, is it doesn’t hurt that bad!? You would think it would be excruciating, but it’s just uncomfortable to slightly painful. Maybe I just kept my mind on the prize, knowing what was in my right breast. Next thing you know, I am on an examination table being prepped for a needle biopsy. I asked, “Can you tell if it’s cancer by looking at the images?”, and the doctor responded, “No, but we have our suspicions and that’s why you are here.”

Four agonizing days later at the end of my work day, the phone finally rang. It was the doctor, “the mass in your right breast is cancerous, and there are two other tumors”. I hung up the phone and dove into my co-workers arms. I cried a short hard cry. I was scared, but still at work. I called my husband and my parents as soon as I could and they cried with me. Even though I was scared, the thought of being stage 4 never crossed my mind at this point… that just couldn’t be. I am the proud Mom of James who just turned 7 years old, and Catie who is 4 and they keep me on my toes! “I still have kiddos to raise, places to go, and too much to do to have cancer!” I thought.

My surgeon was wonderful. He had an excellent reputation and genuinely cared. He gave a very detailed explanation of what to expect throughout the stages of treatment. I had a mastectomy on March 10, 2011. Following surgery, I really thought I would have aggressive chemo, followed by radiation, followed by hormone therapy. (The typical treatment for stage 1-3 breast cancer). After my surgery, the surgeon explained to my husband that the tumors had attached to my chest wall, needing a radical mastectomy, and he plucked 12 lymph nodes, of which 7 were positive with cancer. My surgeon scheduled me for a pet scan a couple weeks later. There were two spots on my spine…I felt side swiped. Next a bone biopsy. Ouch!

When breast cancer has made itself evident, metastasized or stage 4 - the approach is to treat you. I learned that I have an old lady’s cancer that feeds on estrogen. Being as I could still make babies, I had plenty to feed the nasty bug, so it grew fast, even though it’s typically a slow growing cancer. After my bone biopsy proved bone metastases, I was told that I was, “incurable” and would spend the rest of my life in treatment. Granted, this may be true, but I couldn’t swallow it. The second oncologist I saw said we needed to remove my ovaries and start hormone therapy immediately followed by radiation. He believes that by starving the cancer, it will definitely keep the cancer from spreading, and may even make it go away? Wow, what a difference a little hope makes. The moral of this part of my story is…get a second opinion no matter what!

Facing a battle, my Aunt suggested to me to have family portraits taken. She said it was very important for me to do for my family, and she would know having a beautiful daughter who passed from cancer tragically young. She was reading the Bulletin one morning and read about Jill Rosell, a local photographer known for her “I Love Bend Oregon” photos on Facebook. After visiting Jill’s web site and seeing the beautiful photos she has taken, my Aunt picked up the phone. After hearing my story, Jill gave my family an amazing gift and took our family portraits. She explained to my Aunt that she wanted to take our photos, not as last photos of the family together, but as a gift to give me strength and joy and a reminder of when I over-came cancer! How beautiful is that?

I have learned so much in just 6 months! I have learned that faith and hope are essential! I have learned that I have an amazing support system from God, Family, Friends, and even people I don’t know! I have learned who my true Friends are and that there is still so much good in people! I have learned it’s important to teach our kids to give and receive! I have learned that I need an open mind to combine alternative medicine with conventional medicine! Maybe that’s all it takes to be cured? I have learned that so many people are affected by this disease, and we need a cure!

My one wish and goal is to spend as much time with my Family as possible. I believe that making memories with my husband and kids is the single most important task I have on hand. Life is short anyway, and we never know what the outcome of cancer will be. The pendulum could swing either way, but with time – I could heal – and that’s wonderful. There is a benefit to raise funds for my medical costs June 25th at The Bend Community Center, and I would love to see you there! There will be dinner, a silent auction and live music! Pine Lane and Past Fraction Zero – both local favorites! Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy Jill’s work as much as I do! Amazing talent and she really does capture your soul.

Best,

Megan Cecil

Capturing some action at CHIMPS INC , Bend Oregon Portrait Photographer.

It began a few months ago with the  thought - 'I want to photograph a chimp'... a phone call later, a visit, an elementary school talk and a pile of cheerios necklaces, resulted in my thought becoming a reality.
Today I spent an amazing morning at CHIMPS INC with Herbie, Jackson and Emma who had fun playing and eating Cheerio necklaces made by some 4th grade students.

Chimps Inc. is a nonprofit, wildlife sanctuary dedicated to furthering chimpanzee conservation through education. It was founded by Lesley Day in 1995 in response to the multitude of captive chimpanzees desperately in need of homes.

It was an honor to have this  opportunity to photograph three of the chimps who reside at Chimps Inc. I felt a natural bond when I watched them moving and showing such human like mannerisms. I could have stayed there ALL day.

Jane Goodall of course always comes to mind anytime I see a chimp! I have some exciting news to share, she will be visiting Bend Oregon on Oct 8th!  Such a wonderful opportunity to see a woman who has had such an impact in the Chimpanzee world.
I look forward to photographing Jane when she visits.

Enjoy and thanks Lesley and the staff at Chimps Inc who are making such a difference!

PUPPY LOVE and something NEW coming to BEND Oregon.

It is not hard to fall in love with tiny perfect puppies who are full of unconditional love and ready to share it with their new best friend. That is exactly what I felt when I meet these adorable pups  last week. Two girls and two boys and just 4 weeks old.
My two kids (who are equivalent of 10 dogs) came along and got to hold and love on these pups.
Right now a puppy is on hold for our family. I know too well how much work and commitment it takes - really it is another child. In the meantime I get plenty of joy from photographing dogs and fortunately Bend is a designer dog town and has an endless supply of dogs for my kids to give their attention to.

An Inspirational Story - RUNNING FROM ADDICTION TO HEALTH. {Portrait Photographer, Bend Oregon}

Who doesn't love to be inspired or hear one of those 'wow' stories. Well I have one to share with you. Recently I became friends with a very cool local lady called Lenora James. She inspired me four weeks ago to sign up for the Half Marathon Training Group through Bend's local running store - Footzone
I could tell you her story but I thought it would be better coming from her.
This week I met up with Lenora for a photo shoot so I could give you a visual feel for Lenora and her accomplishments. It was a delight capturing such an inspiring and happy person. I am so proud of all she has accomplished.

Firstly here is what Lenora has to share -

I never remembered NOT smoking!  My parents smoked for me, they filled the house with second hand smoke- I can’t remember my Mom not having a cigarette lit!  Then when I was twelve it was my turn to deliver the drug.  On a summer vacation the daughter of my parent’s best friends and I snuck out with the cigarettes we had taken and went into the woods alongside the resort on Orcas Island and proceeded to choke down our first. Thirty Three years later in September of 2009, I was drowning in my own flem due to “Smoking induced bronchitis” and the doctor told me not to try to quit because, he said “You’re too sick”!
Enough!! I started taking the drug Chantix when I was well enough and 5 weeks later through a series of steps I was done.   I knew from previous experience when I had quit for over a year that getting gigantic was not an option and as if planned (it wasn’t) a multitude of dominos started to fall that led to my first steps as a runner!
Jill asked me “what inspired you to run?” and the answer is “the feeling of accomplishment”! With  the first  “block” that I ran, and then the 2 minutes and then the first mile up to the ridiculous 26.2 miles that I ran in Sacramento at the “California International  Marathon” on December 5th 2010 - almost to the date  a year after that first “block”!!  After thirty races in all last year the inspiration comes from within!   The motivation is ALL together different, it comes from people like Connie Austin who first made it fun in the six week “Learn to Run” program and then cheered me on the rest of the way!  Connie has a fairy wand and even when she isn’t with me on a race when I am having difficulty I can envision her dancing around me with her joyous enthusiasm- it always cracks me up!  It’s people like my friend Janae Wiseman- we started this together in that first “LTR” class and at the end of every run “High Fived” each other and went on and on that WE DID IT!  It’s ALL the people at the Foot Zone that answered my questions and greeted me with questions after my races!  It could just be a smile on the trail or a “hey” coming at me from a runner going in the other directions!  It’s the people I know around town sharing their accomplishments with me- I have been brought to tears more than once by watching someone finish running a distance that they “never” thought they could and the excitement that followed!  It’s really all the people in this community of runners that keep me motivated!
I would encourage anyone that is thinking of starting a running or walking program to sign up for one of the “Learn to Run” classes.  There are people at all different levels- I helped a woman (just like I was helped in the beginning by people like Nikki Cheney)that could only run for one minute at a time when she started and the whole point is that she STARTED! I came in dead last at the “Xterra Trail Half Marathon National Championship”  last summer and it was one of the FUNNEST races I did.  I kept thinking to myself that I was “Way ahead of the people that didn’t show up”!  So my “advice” would be if you’re thinking about it…….. SHOW UP!

High Five Jill and Thank You!
Lenora ( RUNora)

Enjoy the photos below and if you happen to see Lenora around Bend - probably running behind a dog, do say hi but she probably will beat you to it.
Lenora forgot to mention that she started a dog walking /running business called DOGONFUN. She is out daily and training numerous hours along side many happy Bend dogs.
